The June long weekend traditionally see’s the running of this well known event, and will again see great rally cars in the cars in forest. In 2006, ACRA used state events in several states to ‘debug’ the now widely accepted Front of Field format employed for the Classic Challenge at ARC level.

What we learnt from these events stood us in good stead in the coming years. Without doubt, the Bega event was the best supported and most successful of them all. Since that time, the event has undergone considerable change, relocation down the road – to Eden, the loss of the traditional ‘shire stages’, new ownership and so on.

2012 see’s a new format for the event, for the first time since 2006, and the only event outside the ARC to do so; the BVR will incorporate a Front of Field Classic type event, based on the ARC model built by ACRA. ACRA fully support this initiative – and our hope is that you can also support this event. ACRA is not involved in the running of the 2012 event, except by way of being advisors re classics and Front of Field formats. However, ACRA are involved in discussions with the organisers with regard to getting a major event launched in this country, similar to New Zealand’s
Otago Rally.

The best way we can make this happen, is to fully support the 2012 event. This year’s Bega Valley Rally will feature an invitational challenge for ‘Classic-style’ two wheel drive cars called the Sapphire Coast Classic. Supplementary Regulations will be available as soon as they are approved by CAMS. This invitational challenge event will run at the front of the main State Championship field in the same way as the Classics ran at the Bega Valley Rally in 2006 & 2007 and in numerous Australia Rally Championship events over recent years.

The Sapphire Coast Classic cars will run at one minute intervals (as dust problems are very limited in mid-June) over the full course of 10 stages and 191 competitive kms, starting at 7:30am on Sunday 10th June at the Snug Cove Wharf at Eden. Regulations similar to those used in the past, and in the Australian Rally Championship, for the conduct of the ‘Classic-style’ 2wds will be adopted. Two-wheel drive vehicles manufactured prior to 1 January 1986 are eligible and will be included at the invitation of the organisers.

They will NOT be eligible for State Championship points and any crew of a classic car entry seeking points must be entered in the relevant category and be seeded amongst the main field. Information sheet is attached.

Classic competitors are reminded that entries close on the 3rd of May for the International Rally Queensland. Classic cars, once again get to compete at the front of field, a position fought hard for by ACRA.

ACRA understands there wil be a NSW driver bringing out his Stanza - he is a hard charger and he will challenge for the lead. It is believed that John and David Hills will bring their new RS 1800's to Qld - These are the same spec as Stewart Reid's car and are sure to put on a magnificent show.

Event Director, Errol Bailey has been a ling term supporter of the "Classics" and we ask ACRA member to show their support for what has to be the best event on the East Coast this year.

With more than 10 International drivers, This years International Rally Queensland is set to be the best ever. Places are limited. More details on the event here

Expressions of interest are sought for this year’s event to be held on Saturday 23rd & Sunday 24th June and will again be based at Scone.
With approximately 650 total Kilometres, approximately 65% on good gravel roads, it is again an event you can do in your Standard Road Car without damage (Subject to Crew behaviour). A vehicle in near standard condition & at least 20 years old is the Club’s preferred choice of vehicle.
As in previous events navigation (simple map reading) is set for (3) three different skill levels & ‘Aid’ envelopes are provided. As there is no route chart for this event, competitors in previous events have needed to have a high level of concentration for prolonged periods, due to length of sections & varied terrain of the area.
Reports on previous Night Owl’s can be found at
Previous AHRG Events
Expressions of interest can be sent to nightowlrally@gmail.com

I posted this over at the BMSC forum and thought it may be of interest to some people here.

Anyone thinking of going to Rally Finland from the 2nd to 5th August and also wanting to catch some historic rallying should consider a trip to The Midnight Sun Rally which will be held in Sweden from the 18th to 20 July. As this is 2 weeks before Finland, the timing can work out well!

The rally is based in Vasteras about 100 km west of Stockholm. The event features a competitive section as well as a regularity section.

I went last year and had a ball and although Scandinavia has a reputation for being expensive, the strength of the Aussie $ means that it is at the moment quite affordable.

This years event is going to honour Ove Andersson with bucket loads of Toyotas. Mikko Hirvonen, Juha Kankkunen and Hannu Mikkola will be driving Toyotas and it is hoped that Carlos Sainz will put in an appearance as well.

Former TTE driver Matts Jonsson will compete in one of his BDA engined Escorts.

I'm fairly sure there will be quite a few Tuthill Porsches and loads of Historic RallySport Escorts being driven by the likes of Stig Blomqvist and Bjorn Waldegard as well.

The event home page Midnattssolsrallyt - The midnight sun rally

From last years rally, the sound of the Stratos of Steve Perez was unreal, it actually hurt my ears as it went past:

This is good also and is a good representation of what the roads are like.
